Panther Leadership Academy 2016
The Ninth Annual Panther Leadership Academy took place May 4-6, 2016 at Glisson Camp and Retreat Center in Dahlonega, Georgia. A group of approximately 90 student leaders and staff spent three days together in presentations, small group meetings and team building exercises. The retreat kicked off with keynote speaker, Justin Jones-Fosu, who inspired everyone to consider the motivation behind their goals and seek to infuse their lives with more passion and fun. Much to the delight of everyone, Justin wrapped up his keynote presentation by serenading peer mentor, Krista Dossie.
Over the course of the retreat, students learned about the Five Exemplary Practices of Leadership and discussed how to incorporate these practices in their daily lives. Students worked in small groups to solve case studies and participated in a competition against the other teams where they had to race through mazes and build houses from cards. On Thursday night, everyone participated in the annual campfire with s’mores and, this year, there was a twist with salsa dancing led by several of the participants.
Panther Leadership Academy is one of my favorite times of the year.
~Jeff Benson, one of the staff facilitators
He echoed the sentiments of many participants who commented that this retreat gave them the opportunity to disconnect from the craziness of life and reconnect with themselves and their goals as a leader. Several students were already talking about returning next year. For those interested, applications for the 2017 Panther Leadership Academy will open in January 2017.
