Leadership Conclave 2018
The 53rd annual Leadership Conclave took place at the Winshape Retreat Center at Berry College from Friday, October 12, 2018 through Sunday, October 14, 2018. A group of 70 student leaders and staff spend three days together in small groups meetings and team building exercises that allowed everyone to explore leadership while working within teams. The retreat also included skits in which students acted out common leadership scenarios, opportunities to connect with other student leaders, and a bonfire with s’mores.
Over the course of the retreat, students learned the SERVE model of leadership which helped the students understand the importance of being servants to the people they are working with. The SERVE model has five required skills that leaders need to do: see and shape the future, engage and develop others, reinvent continuously, value results and relationships, and embody their values. Students explored these skills by working in small groups to solve leadership challenges that required them to demonstrate these principles while also practicing effective listening and communication skills. As one of the most popular activities, teams got to build their own Rube Goldberg Machines, which asked them to create a machine that are linked together to produce a domino effect. This was the most fun, but also the most challenging task of the entire weekend.
“Throughout Conclave, I learned many valuable lessons that are necessary and indispensable. It has taught me that serving is the most important key to become a great leader. The cabin, meals and programs were all fantastic and perfect!”
– Jihae Shin, Leadership Conclave Participant
This student echoed the ideas of many of the participants who commented the retreat allowed them to learn more about leadership while also connecting with other students.
Leadership Conclave is an annual retreat that takes places during every fall semester. Applications for fall 2019 will open in September 2019.
